Minara Park Renovation | Thesis | D.Z

Minara Park Renovation | Educational-Thesis | 2016 | Erbil | Public | Proposal
Description:

Lit up like an urban wonderland on summer evenings, the park is a popular destination for the city’s youth and young families taking in the cool evening air.

Well-planted walkways and shaded groves provide a romantic back-drop for promenading couples and a raised terrace cafe offers narguille (hookah pipes) and welcome refreshments.

Tucked away in a quiet corner of the park is the 13th century minaret from which the park takes its name.

Built during the reign of Muzzaffar al-Din Kokbari (brother-in-law to the crusader-battling Saladin), the ornate brick minaret is all that remains of the city’s medieval growth beyond the confines of the raised citadel.

A short walk or taxi ride from the bustling Bazaar, Minare Park offers a peaceful retreat in the heart of the city and an opportunity to escape from the madding crowds.

Florya Gates | Florya City | Erbil

Florya Gates | Florya City | Residential | 2015 | Erbil | Private | Under Construction
Description:
One of the most ambitious land-development and construction projects is taking place in the desert near Erbil, the capital of Kurdistan region in Iraq. The project concerns Floria City that is still under construction, but the rendering above can give you an idea of how the finished residential compound will look like. Erbil construction projects are increasing with more construction companies taking part in this immensely booming economy. Floria City was designed to be an oasis where buildings seem to grow from the ground just like the palm trees, the plants, the flowers and the lush greenery which will adorn the city. The project started in September 2011 and is expected to finish by 2016. This is a private investment project which is constructed by RAD Company and the cost is estimated to approximately half a billion dollars. The area is divided into four different parts that were named after some of the most beautiful indigenous flowers: the Nergis Plaza, the Mercan Plaza, the Rose Garden and the Papatya Field. • The Nergis Plaza extends over an area of 183.000m2 and contains 71 buildings with 518 apartments in total. Here you can find two types of apartment villas, as well as Nergis Tower apartments. • The Rose Garden is the most luxurious part of the city as it contains 5 palaces of 2000m2 each, 9 palaces of 1200m2, 13 palaces of 1000m2 and 15 apartment-villa buildings. In the area there are also 15 10-floor residential towers with 600 apartments in total. • The Papatya Field is opposite the Rose Garden area and is the part of the city which contains 57 towers over an area of 159000m2. The apartments here promise an excellent view of the whole city and residents on the upper floors will be able to admire the whole city of Erbil. The total number of apartments in the area is 2154. • The Mercan area is located in the centre of the City and it features an 11,095m2 Hotel, a Spa for women, a Police Station, a Fire Station, a Clinic, and the Shopping Center of the City which covers an area of 65.781m2. For those interested in combining their office and residence in one, the Mercan area features several types of Home Office arrangements to choose from. Special Features Erbil Construction – Floria City offers everything a modern city can offer – from shopping, entertainment and an international restaurant to health and fitness clubs and from several game halls to facilities for the most popular sports, such as basketball, volleyball and tennis. At the same time, everyone can have excellent health care services at the modern infirmary of the city while children can spend their time in the most creative way at the Kid’s Club or have fun at the Children’s Park. As for parking, there are thousands of underground parking spaces for residents, private garages, and hundreds of surface parking spaces for both residents and visitors.

Erbil Gas Power Station (EGPS)

Erbil Gas Power Station | Industrial Power Plant | 2016 | Erbil-Iraq |Completed | Private
Description:

Located in the south of Erbil Governorate in Kurdistan (North Iraq), about 22 km from Erbil city center. the Power Station is built on an area of 750,000 m², consists of eight Frame 9E GE gas turbines, with the rated capacity of 125MW each, in addition to two GE-C7 steam turbines, with a rated capacity of 250MW each. The total capacity of the plant is 1500MW. This project started in 2007 when the first basic foundation lay in January 2007. Civil work started on 18th of Feb. 2007 then installation work began in June 2007. The first gas turbine of the First Phase of the project (500MW), which consisted of 4 units, was operated on 23rd of May 2008. In 2011 the second Phase of the project (500MW) started by adding another 4 units, thus doubling the number of gas turbines to eight units and bringing the total capacity to 1000MW. As the Third Phase of the project, MGH started converting EGPS into a combined cycle which added 500MW to plant capacity. The ground-breaking ceremony for the Combined Cycle project took place on 5th July 2012. The project utilizes the gas turbine exhaust heat emissions to produce steam in Heat Recovery Steam Generators (HRSG), which is in turn used to generate electricity in two steam turbines. This process increases the production capacity without using extra fuel. It also reduces the amount of CO2 emissions and hence saves the environment of combustion emissions. The electricity produced is exported via a dozen high voltage lines connected to the national grid in the Kurdistan region. Now after the completion of the combined cycle, the plant capacity is raised to 1500MW. GPS became the first combined cycle power plant in Iraq and the biggest power plant in production capacity in the Kurdistan region of Iraq.

Description:
Iraq’s Kayar Group and Jawaharat Alrawabi companies signed a $249 million contract to build 3,827 housing units in the southern region of Diwaniya, said, Ahmed Hisham, president of the Diwaniya Investment Commission. “We are also styuding designs for other companies to build 15,000 residential units,” Hisham said in a telephone interview today. “Some of these companies are from the UAE, Italy, Brazil and Iraq.” The project will be built within three years to the south of Diwaniya city and the province will need 100,000 residential units by 2015, he said. Iraq, which holds the world’s fifth-largest oil reserves, is seeking foreign investment to help rebuild an economy and infrastructure damaged by years of conflict, sanctions and underinvestment. In March 2010, the government approved plans to build 1 million apartments by 2014 for lower- and middle-income families to help a housing shortage.

Ministry of Defense

Ministry of Defense | Governmental-Office | 2010 | Erbil | Public | Proposal
Description:
A Ministry of Defence (UK) or Defense (US), also known as a Department of Defence or Defense, is the common name for a part of the government found in states where the government is divided into ministries or departments, responsible for matters of defence. Such a department usually includes all branches of the military, and is usually controlled by a Defence Minister, Minister of Defence, or Secretary of Defense. Historically, such departments were referred to as a Ministry of War or War Department, although such departments generally had authority only over the army of a country, with a separate department governing other military branches. Prior to WWII, most “Ministries of War” were Army ministries, while the Navy and the Air Force, if it existed as a separate branch, had their own departments. As late as 1953, for example, the Soviets for instance had a “Ministry of War” alongside a “Ministry of the Navy”.

Description:
Erbil, known as Hewlêr , is the largest city and capital of the Kurdistan Region in Iraq. It is located 88 kilometres (55 miles) east of Mosul and has a permanent population of approximately 1.5 million as of 2013. Urban life at Erbil (Hewlêr) can be dated back to at least 6000 BC, and it is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world. At the heart of the city is the ancient Citadel of Arbil. In the early part of the 3rd millennium BC, the Hurrians from Asia Minor were the first to establish Urbilum and expand their rule to parts of northern Mesopotamia. The city became an integral part of Assyria from the 25th century BC to the 7th century BC, but after it lost its independence at the end of the 7th century BC, both Assyria and the city of Erbil were under the rule of many regional powers in turn, including the Babylonians, the Medes, the Persians and Greeks. Following the Arab Islamic conquest of Mesopotamia, the Arabs dissolved Assyria (then known as Assuristan/Athura) as a geo-political entity in the mid-7th century AD, and during medieval times the city came to be ruled by the Seljuk and Ottoman Turks. Erbil’s archaeological museum houses a large collection of pre-Islamic artifacts, and is a center for archaeological projects in the area.
